For the Creative Community competition we selected from hundreds of entrants in three categories; photography, digital design and traditional mediums. Below are the sites that we believe displayed the strongest portfolios in their respective categories and to the right are the honorable mentions. Take a moment to view their work and we think you'll agree.
Traditional Mediums
(Painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, sculpture, etc.)
Penelope
Visit the site
In contemporary realism it can be difficult to balance photorealism and personal expression. However, Penelope manages to create these harmonious paintings with an understanding of color, composition and tone. The resulting images are an expression of color balance and ambiance that suggest the feeling of being at a location in a manner that a photo could never achieve.
Digital Designs
(Digital Art, photo manipulation, 3d rendering)
Anthony Dziemiela
Visit the site
Currently a student at the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago, Anthony's series of digitally enhanced photographs entitled 'Field Trip' present us with delightful images of penguins mingling with city pigeons, a giraffe navigating Chicago streets and flamingos bathing in a public fountain. As a series, the work is an excellent example of digital retouching to tell a story that would otherwise be very difficult (if not impossible)n to recreate in the real world. Anthony has created an almost magical world were the surreal is plausible. (Bonus: check out the blog for some pretty cool links.)
Photography
(Includes all photography)
Somnang Vann
Visit the site
The photographs shown on Somnang's site include portraits, landscapes, buildings and cars. However, a common element within the portfolio is an eye for careful composition - especially when working with groups of people. The photographer shows an understanding of body language, angles and lighting that is invaluable for commercial achievement. All of the images presented have a polished thematic professionalism and the family portraits in particular are warm and personable.
